TD Halifax Jazz Festival 2013: Porter Airlines Late Night Jazz: Gypsophilia

The Company House
2202 Gottingen Street Halifax, NS

Gypsophilia is synonymous with good times. Wooing audiences to their feet since 2004, the Halifax-based seven-piece has proven time and time again to be one of the most reliably entertaining bands on the east coast. Beginning as a tribute to European jazz master Django Reinhardt, Gypsophilia quickly fell into composing original material, creating a fusion of gypsy jazz, klezmer, funk, bebop and classical music that appeals to not only finely-tuned ears of the jazz scene but the indie crowd too. Meticulous, polished and frenzied all at once, the quirky septet hypnotizes with its contagious energy and superlative musicianship. Well-dressed and well-decorated, Gypsophilia consistently reels in love in the form of trophies, most recently taking home the Music Nova Scotia award for Best Jazz Recording Of The Year and the East Coast Music Award for World Recording of the Year both, for their third release Constellation, which was recorded with Arcade Fire producer Howard Bilerman. No matter where your musical tastes lie, there’s a magnetism to this band that’s undeniable. A piece of advice? Just give in. Personnel: Adam Fine (bass), Alec Frith (guitar), Gina Burgess (violin), Matt Myer (trumpet/keys), Nick Wilkinson (guitar), Ross Burns (guitar/percussion), Sageev Oore (piano/keys)

Halifax-based Gypsophilia is a group of six performers playing original high-energy jazz that is by turns angular, sweet, nostalgic, modern and raucous. In recent years Gypsophilia has become a formidable touring outfit, regularly crisscrossing the continent and playing to sold-out crowds all over Canada and the US. Their killer live shows and danceable, genre-bending sound have made them an audience favourite at major festivals and small clubs alike. With a combination of serious musicianship, humour and showmanship they are capable of enchanting a sit-down crowd one moment, and whipping people into a dancing, clapping, singing frenzy the next. “Gypsophilia offers a suave, stylish mix of jazzy spirit and Eastern European licks, with just enough roughness around the edges to make its music sound authentically lived-in rather than merely tried-on”. - Time Out New York
